The original lift plug valve, invented by SchuF in 1914, is a simple and clever design incorporating the first double block and bleed mechanism. Today, the Lift Plug Valve is widely used in the Chemical, Refinery (including Delayed Coking, Hydrocracking, and Visbreaking), Polymer, Cement, Power and Mining industries.
Lift Plug Valves are specifically designed for severe applications that deal with high temperatures, fluids and suspended solids. They have:
Protected Valve Seat (PVS)
Total Sealing between body and plug ensures clean cavities
Flushing and/or Purging only during operation
Double Block & Bleed
Optional flushing valve to flush out any debris above the plug
Bottom entry, 3 or 4 outlets in T (90°) or Y (120°)
Lift Plug Valves have many designs, but generally, a Lift Plug Valve has two seals with a mechanism that rotates between open and closed positions that protects both seals from the flow path. To operate a Lift Plug Valve, raise the plug when it is opened and rotate the plug 90 degrees to fully open the valve to reduce friction. To close the valve, turn the plug 90 degrees again to the closed position and then lower it to seal the body seat and seal together. The seals come in either soft seals or hard seals depending on the application. To buy the right Lift Plug Valve for your application, contact one of our valve experts today.
There are a couple of variations to Lift Plug Valves that are specific for certain applications.
High-temperature Lift Plug Valves are commonly used in oil and petroleum refining, petrochemical, chemical and energy industrial applications.
is a cylindrical plug with three plates that have soft-sealing structures. This valve also provides Double Block and Bleed functions.
Lift Plug Valves are commonly used in chemical and petrochemical applications, especially for highly-erosive fluid applications such as slurries particularly at high temperatures. These valves are used in Refineries, Coker units, FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking), Ethylene Plants and other chemical and petrochemical industrial applications.

It’s always best to have a qualified technician install your valves for industrial applications. However, if you want to be able to install a Lift Plug yourself, contact a valve expert to guide you through the process. Winnellie Valves and Process also provide valve training courses for all types of valves.
