Gate valves are the most commonly used form of pipeline isolation and are available in many different materials, sizes and pressure ratings. They provide good shutoff features, are bi-directional, have minimal pressure loss and come in metal seated designs that are suitable for both high and low temperatures. Cryogenic designs are also available.
Gate Valves are designed for either fully open or fully closed actions (think of a gate in a fence – you either leave it open or closed!), therefore they should not be used as control or regulating valves. They work by inserting a rectangular gate or ‘wedge’ into the path of flowing fluid and are operated by a threaded stem that connects the actuator to the stem of the gate. Gate Valves are not suitable for regulating flow or pressure, or being operated in a partially open condition.
Gate valves are used in many industrial applications including the oil and gas industry, petrochemical, power generation and marine. Non-rising stem gate valves are very popular on ships or in underground applications, or where your vertical space is limited because they don’t take up extra space. Rising stem gate valves are however the most popular as you can visibly see if the valve is in the open or closed position. These are widely used in the oil and gas, power generation and pulp and paper industries.
There are many different types of Gate Valves to buy in Australia such as flexible or solid wedge, inside or outside screw, expanding gate, through conduit gate, cryogenic, knife gate and subsea. To buy the right Gate Valve for your application contact one of our valve experts today.
Gate Valves are great for use in applications that involve viscous liquids such as heavy oils, light grease, and other non-flammable viscous liquids. They are available in large sizes to better handle thick flow, so check what application you require the gate valve to handle before choosing one. Gate valves also have low-pressure limitations and are not optimal in applications that require cleanliness or sanitary conditions. They are however excellent for use anywhere a shutoff valve is required. The valves are designed for full-area flow to minimise the pressure drop and allow the passage of a pipe-cleaning pig. Since most of the flow change occurs near the seat, the relatively high fluid velocity causes disc and seat wear and eventual leakage if the valve is used to regulate flow.
It’s always best to have a qualified technician install your valves for industrial applications. However if you want to be able to install a gate valve yourself, contact a valve expert to guide you through the process. Winnellie Valves and Process also provide valve training courses for all types of valves.
